Terrestrial radiation

Radiation emitted by the Earth’s surface, the atmosphere and the clouds. It is also known as thermal infrared or longwave radiation, and is to be distinguished from the near-infrared radiation that is part of the solar spectrum. Infrared radiation, in general, has a distinctive range of wavelengths (spectrum) longer than the wavelength of the red light in the visible part of the spectrum. The spectrum of terrestrial radiation is almost entirely distinct from that of shortwave or solar radiation because of the difference in temperature between the Sun and the Earth–atmosphere system. [IPCC, 2013].

Temporal resolution

Temporal resolution: The time scale at which a measurement is taken or a value is represented. Daily and monthly resolutions denote one value per day and one value per month, respectively.

Time-series

Time-series: A set of observations, results, or other data obtained over a period of time at regular intervals. A time-series usually displays values as function of time, i.e., time is on the horizontal axis. Uncertainty: An expression of the degree to which a value (e.g., the future state of the climate system) is unknown. Uncertainty can result from lack of information or from disagreement about what is known or even knowable. Uncertainty can be represented by quantitative measures (a range of values calculated by various models), or by qualitative statements, reflecting the judgment of a team of experts.
